about

'you can hear me' was composed for a commission for solo brass instrument with looping app on mobile phone by Durham Brass Festival in 2018. It was written as a letter to my grandmother, who died around 8 years ago.

This is the recording of the premiere performance at Durham Brass Festival, and this project was a kind of smaller version of the solo setup I'd been working on. In this solo setup, I'd write short poems, and then translate them into musical notes using an alphabet system we use with the band Natural Causes (invented by our pianist Hugh Nankivell). This piece culminates with the word 'LOVE' made into a multi-layered, looped chord sequence at the end of the piece.

I hope to play an extended version of this piece, with my full solo setup, at some point. As with many of these solo pieces, I only used part of the full written piece in this recording.

UPDATE - now with a film made by Paul Thompson, from a concept by Chris Dowding, premiered online at the EFG London Jazz Festival in 2020, in conjunction with ClerkenwellARTSlab:

Many thanks to Paul Gudgin and Durham Brass Festival for this opportunity. Thanks to Morris Masuda for the remix.
